Starbucks combined 1950's beatnik culture with 80's materialism to become a nationwide success and part of 21st Century culture. The first store opened in 1971, a single store in Seattle's historic Pike Place Market. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders.
It is not only a place where people can go for a Latte, Mocha, or a Frappuccino with whipped cream but just as the name evokes a sense of romance so has what Starbucks have become to those who are single.
Starbucks IS the quintessential first date.
Their mission is 'to inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time'. How is that achieved in the 21st Century? Starbucks is the 'new library' but unlike a library people can have their favorite frothy, sugary, caramel or chocolately drink as they read, e-mail, facebook, or get their paper done for class. At the same time it offers a place to meet new people in a casual and inconspicuous manner.
For those people who are either who have never been married or divorced it is has become the new 'hot spot' for those who would rather not go to a bar or a club to 'mix and mingle'. Beyond being able to offer the opportunity to meet new people it is also a great place to meet up with an old or good friend. Starbucks offers the ability to spend quality time with those who are close to you when you both have busy schedules.
As every Sophisticate knows that regardless of the casual nature of any Starbucks location buying a drink from the barista, finding a table or chair, meeting new people, or catching up with good friends social etiquette rules ALWAYS apply. The manners and politeness a Sophisticate is known for is always included with whatever is ordered.
Starbucks can be the place for solitude and a place to provide the opportunity for interaction with strangers that could result in new friends or a new love relationship. Starbucks has become more than a coffee shop and as become the quintessential first date providing the opportunity for 'having a cup of joe' to mean something a little more exciting ;D!
