Saran Kaba Jones Voss Foundation
2011 'Women Helping Women' Honoree
In 2010, my Aunt Maggie died of breast cancer. My Aunt Maggie was a role model for me growing up not because of what she taught me but because of what she showed me, she was an example for me and how I should live my life. Since she didn't have a lot of money, she gave of herself to those who needed someone.
We all know actions speak louder than words and even the smallest act speaks volumes about kindness. No matter what type of economy exists people are selfish. When I'm selfish it is because it is easy. It is easier not to care then to care because care involves work. When it really matters, instead of feeling tired I feel miserable that I didn't do anything. I allow my negative feelings, my fear, and insecurities to get the best of me. Negativity, fear, insecurities, and insincerity are not attributes of a TRUE Sophisticate.
A Sophisticate is not perfect but she tries. Her focus and life lives in optimism and confidence. A Sophisticate understands that life or anything worth anything in this world is hard work. If life is a pie, she believes that giving to others does not subtract anything from her life rather it adds to it. A Sophisticate is the flower in the desert, she is an individual, and doesn't follow what everyone else is doing. Yet, the difference between her and everyone else is that no one knows all of the kind acts she performs for others because she doesn't expect a 'Thank you'.
A Sophisticate realizes that helping others can be as small as smiling to a stranger to as big as someone like Saran Kaba Jones, an honoree of the Voss Foundation 'Women Helping Women', who by starting funding the education of a young boy in Liberia inspired her to found FACE Africa whose goal is to rebuild and improve communities that were impacted during the years of civil unrest in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
