Michelle Obama was raised in a one bedroom apartment in Chicago's South Side. She graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School to become a lawyer, Chicago city administrator, and community outreach worker. Then, she supported her husband and became the First Lady in the White House. She is well mannered, intelligent, and hardworking. In the White House, she championed for education, raised her children and supported her husband through a tough administration. She is the perfect example of Sophistication in the 21st Century.
Although it may seem like culture and manners have ended they have not. Rather, our culture and our manner are being re-defined. Sophistication is different and should be defined differently for the 21st Century. If we were to write a revised definition of Sophistication in Webster's Dictionary for the 21st Century, Sophistication would be defined as 1: the process of becoming cultured and knowledgeable 2: to be different yet, unique 3: to be honest and sincere; to be true to oneself and others.
What is Sophistication? Webster's Dictionary defines Sophistication as 1: the use of sophistry: sophistic reasoning 2: the process or result of becoming cultured, knowledgeable, or disillusioned; 3: the process or result of becoming more complex, developed, or subtle.
Sophistication in the 21st Century is about what is on the inside rather what is on the outside. Sophistication means more than someone dressing well and having good manners and has less to do with appearance, race, financial situation or gender. Sophistication has less to do about fitting in than standing out because of being different and unique. Sophistication in the 21st Century is about being an individual than part of the crowd and has less to do about conforming to what others want.
In the 21st Century does this definition accurately define Sophistication? With our lives and social interactions on-line and instantaneous, does Sophistication still exist and does it exist in the same form it used to? Is Sophistication possible in the 21st Century? Does the definition of Sophistication need to be re-defined, updated, or changed?
A Sophisticate in the 21st Century doesn't fit into a particular mold except her own. A Sophisticate stands apart from the crowd because of the quality of her heart not the quality of her jewelry or clothes. A Sophisticate is true to herself and therefore true to others. A Sophisticate is strong enough to know be who she is and who she wants to be and she defines her own success.
Sophistication in the 21st Century is less about what you hide than what you reveal; less about what you wear than how you wear it; less about what you wear than what you say; less about who you pretend to be than who you are; What is Sophistication in the 21st Century? You. ;D
