A Sophisticate has a Tattoo

"A tattoo is a true poetic creation, and is always more than meets the eye. As a tattoo is grounded on living skin, so its essence emotes a poignancy unique to the mortal human condition" V. Vale from 'Modern Primitives: An Investigation of Contemporary Adornment and Ritual'

Years ago, tattoos were a ritual or rite of passage for certain native tribes (and that is true for tribes in other countries today) for sailors, men in the military, and those who wanted to prove how tough they were. Now, they are so commonplace for women and men that even Mattel decided to create a Barbie doll with tattoos. A barbie doll with tattoos was a major departure from the carbon copy 1950's image Mattel previously portrayed.

A tattoo in the 21st Century is Sophisticated based on the tattoo itself. The point and idea of a tattoo is a representation of a Sophisticate. A tattoo is what a Sophisticate believes in and represents her personality. A tattoo is a part of a Sophisticate not just because it is placed on her skin but because it represents what it is in her heart.

People get tattoos to represent or show when a person they loved died. They get a tattoo to show what they are most passionate about or what they believe in. They get a tattoo to show what they represent. If I were to get a tattoo, I would get a diamond with the word, priceless written above the diamond. Why? A diamond is my birthstone and I believe it represents who I am. The tiny flaws of a diamond make it beautiful. A diamond has many different facets and is unique. Also, a diamond is the hardest gem to break. Finally, like myself a diamond is something ordinary that became more than what was expected.

Tattoos may not have been perceived as something classy or sophisticated 20 or 30 years ago. Now, in the 21st Century tattoos and the person who has one is considered stylish and sophisticated. In the end,  a tattoo is considered sophisticated because of the heart and quality of the person who wears one. ;D!
