"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched but must be felt with the heart" Helen Keller

One morning while getting Starbucks, I saw the Vampire Weekend CD 'Morning Vampires of the City'. The cover had a picture of New York City and the trim were flowers. The cover reminded me of what it means to be Sophisticated in City the 21st Century.

The city is busy, crowded, and harsh because of the crowds. There is no time for anyone else because everyone walks with a purpose or a focus. Everyone has a destination in mind whether it is for business or for pleasure.

The problem with the city is that most of the time, people are selfish. Due to the crowds, limited space, and limited time people feel they have, it is all about getting what you want when you want it.

Some people would not describe the city as "pretty". Some people only see spray paint on the side of buildings, concrete, and dirt. There are a few people who feel the energy and see the beautiful skyscrapers that shine in the daylight and sparkle at night.

In New York City there is the Upper East Side.  The place that stories were written about. A place where only the very wealthy live, Edith Wharton the author of 'The Age of Innocence' made her career based on the surrounding area. It is a garden in the midst of the harshness of the city. For me, visiting the Upper East Side is having the pleasures of living in the suburbs (A Sophisticate in the Suburbs) in the city.

Sophistication in the 21st Century is the place where the best of the suburbs and the city meet.  So, who is a Sophisticate in the  city? A Sophisticate in the city is similar to being 'The Flower in the Desert'.

In the midst of turmoil, crowds, glass, and concrete, there grow a beauty of spirit that shines brighter than the lights around her. A Sophisticate in the city is kind when others are mean. Optimistic when people are critical or pessimistic. A Sophisticate refuses to allow the city to turn her into the worst version of herself.

Good examples of Sophistication in the City when it comesTO fictional characters include Holly Golightly in 'Breakfast in Tiffany's', Charlotte York in 'Sex in the City', Blair Waldorf in 'Gossip Girl'. All of them were far from perfect but they had hope and eternal optimism. They were determined. Truly innocent and naive in a city that could have destroyed what they believed in... love. They had style and class.

A Sophisticate in the city is a diamond in the rough. A rose in the midst of thorns and the excitement that brings alive the character of any city. In the end, a Sophisticate stands taller, shines brighter, and sparkles more beautifully than the skyscrapers. ;D
