A Sophisticate and her Personal Style

Coco Chanel
As Coco Chanel once stated, "Fashion fades but Style remains the same". It's true. Fashion is akin to art. In fact, like Nigel says in the movie 'The Devil Wears Prada' "it's greater than art because you live your life in it". Every Fall, fashion magazines, and designers create clothes from their imagination that is akin to art. Then, it is standardized, advertised, and communicated into trends for us to emulate.

"Fashion is about emulating, Style is about you."

The question of how to determine your personal style revolves around how do you determine who you are. It is about answering to yourself and others what you represent and how you would like to be perceived.

This list is short because the rest of the personal style guidelines are up to you, how you want to represent yourself to others, and who you are!

#1 Trust Your Instincts: When shopping have an idea of what you are looking for before you walk into a mall or a large department store and are presented with no less then a 1,000 different options listen to your instincts, if you are not crazy about it put it down! odds are you won't like it on you. Remember, clothing stores are trying to make the clothes look attractive but you already are!

#2: Consistency is Important: Consistency develops your trademark and helps others remember you if you choose BUT...

#3: Find something that is unique AND uniquely you: Remember Carrie Bradshaw in 'Sex in the City' and her big flower pinned to her shirt?!Have you ever noticed Blair Waldorf's headband in 'Gossip Girl'?! it doesn't have to be big but something that might represent you or what you believe in... a signature look or piece of jewelry or item that is just as unique and special as you!

#4: Wear the color or colors that make you feel most comfortable and happy: What color looks best on you?! Forget trying to determine if you are a winter, spring, fall skin type!  those are the colors you will wear that will look THE BEST for you! ;D

#5: Remember and think about Perception:  Ask yourself 'who you are you?' and 'how you want to be seen or remembered after someone meets or sees you for the first time?'

#6: Go back to your Childhood: As we grow up our peers made us change our minds but what was the outfit that you enjoyed wearing the most as a child?! why did you like wearing it?! I used to love wearing my off-white dress with an enormous pink bow and stockings... there was nothing else that I would wear that would make me be happier or feel prettier! ;D
