A Sophisticate Celebrates her Birthday

"The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate." Oprah Winfrey

One of the best birthdays I ever had was one that I spent with my mom. It was when I was in my mid-twenties and right before she was diagnosed with cancer.

She came to visit me at my apartment in Philadelphia. We went to the mall shopping and I got lot's of clothes and goodies. We went out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It was the girls day out that I had always wanted from her growing up. At the end of the day we both got into our p.j.'s. My mom came into the living room with a cupcake and a candle for me to make a wish. As I ate my cupcake we snuggled on the couch and watched our favorite show 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'.

My birthday that year was special not because I got very nice physical  gifts from the mall. It was special  for me because for one day, I received the most important emotional gift of them all.  The gift of being able to have fun with my mother who was also my friend.

There is something magical about the day you were born. Every birthday a Sophisticate wakes up knowing that there is something different about the day. What is different? A birthday is like any other day. The difference is her mind set. A Sophisticate wakes up on her birthday as if it were Christmas morning. Unlike Christmas where she knows that  physical gifts are awaiting her, on her birthday she knows emotional gifts are awaiting her as well.

For one day, a Sophisticate doesn't have to seek out or fight to be the center of attention. For one day, she allowed to be the center of attention without apologies. For one day, she doesn't have to accomplish or do anything to feel loved and admired.

For one day, she is loved and admired merely because she came into this world.

"God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well." Voltaire

When a Sophisticate celebrates her birthday, she shines as bright as the sun and wishes with all of her heart. She celebrates her birthday because she celebrates life and shows appreciation for being alive.

When a cake (or cupcakes) are  brought out  for a brief moment everyone is celebrating her. The flame of the candles illuminate the hopes of her dreams and wishes for the coming year.

"Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!" Dr. Seuss

Similar to after the smoke clears from the candles, after her birthday she must go back to making her wishes come true instead of just hoping. In the end, a Sophisticate celebrates her birthday because she knows that she is alive and being alive is the most wonderful gift of them all. ;D
