"Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you" Oscar Wilde
When people hear the word precious, they might think of angels or cute porcelain statues that are flawless in nature and in features. According to Webster’s Dictionary the definition of Precious is 1. of great value or high price 2. highly esteemed or cherished 3. excessively refined. The word precious is a word to describe what is priceless like a diamond.
The movie 'Precious' was based off of the book 'Push' by Sapphire. After watching the movie, there was nothing angelic, highly esteemed, cherished, or what society might call 'refined' about the main character's life. Why was the main character called 'Precious'? Without research, I believe it was because of and based on the personality of the main character. No matter what situation she was born into or situation she was placed in during the movie her personality and her heart was the definition of precious.
Sophistication in the 21st Century is about what is on the inside and not what is on the outside. Being precious is not what is seen with the eyes but what is felt with the heart. In the 21st Century, a Sophisticate is not precious because she is angelic, cute, or lives in a picture perfect world. A Sophisticate is precious because of her character, her ethics, and her heart.
A Sophisticate is precious because she esteems and cherishes herself. In the face of harsh reality or when other may not believe in her abilities or she is not loved by another person, the belief she has in her abilities and the love she has for herself is enough. That attribute, allows her to radiate and show her specialness to make her highly valuable not only to herself but to others as well.
In the end, to be precious means to be priceless. In the 21st Century, a Sophisticate's heart is priceless because it is strong, genuine, confident, and above all else, precious. ;D
