A Sophisticate is a Feminist

"The truth will set you free but first it will piss you off" Gloria Steinem

In high school the term Feminist was associated with the word 'Feminazi'. I wanted to have nothing to do with being a Feminist. For me, the word feminist was a dirty word. Then I started working  and saw the way some men treated me and other women simply because of our gender. A source of pride of being a female took hold and  whether wanted to or not, I became a feminist.

"Microinequities are cumulative, subtle messages that occur when these signals are negative or promote a negative bias. Microinequities are not one-time events. They are cumulative, repeated behaviors that devalue, discourage, and impair performance in the workplace." (from Insight Education Systems)

The micro inequities that exist are so small they are hardly noticeable yet, felt deeply.  The first year of my blog provided an outlet for my anger of the micro inequities I felt. My anger was transformed into a positive. That positive was believing that Sophistication in the 21st Century was about empowerment. The backbone of Sophisticate in the Suburbs is female empowerment.

"A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle." Gloria Steinem

Sophistication is about the inner qualities a female possesses. A Sophisticate stands-up for what she believes in, has no fear, is resilient, is a Phoenix (falls and rises), and fails. In the end, a Sophisticate is a female who has the innate ability to succeed.

"I have yet to hear a man ask for advice on how to combine marriage and a career." Gloria Steinem

A Sophisticate is a feminist because is she is proud to be a female. She is proud of the struggles that previous women had to go through to achieve the opportunities that she has now. The emergence of female CEO's has been a great accomplishment. Yet, the individual promotion of women within the ranks of corporations is still a challenge. Unfortunately, it may be due to women leaving the workforce. Why are women leaving? Are men leaving as fast or in as many numbers as women? Does true equality mean there were as many women who are CEO's of Fortune 500 Companies as men?

"If you say, I'm for equal pay, that's a reform. But if you say. I'm a feminist, that's a transformation of society." Gloria Steinem

21st Century Feminism is about equality. A Sophisticate today knows there are more battles to be won including equal pay and the complete elimination of domestic violence.  Those two issues affect women globally.

In the past there was no such phrase as 'Domestic Violence'. The violence that occurred was the norm. As women have risen to position of prominence, progress has been made. 21st Century Feminism is more about equality and love. Yet, in the 21st Century, safety is one of the biggest issues facing women around the world. Human trafficking is a serious concern. Feminism is what unites women on a global scale. How can women hope to accomplish anything significant in the global economy and political sphere until that is eliminated?

What does feminism mean? It means what affects one woman affects all women regardless of race, religion, or sexual preference.

A Sophisticate is a feminist because she chooses to be whatever and whomever she wants to be without apology (A Sophisticate Never Apologizes). A Sophisticate believes in herself and works hard to achieve whatever goal she establishes for herself.  A Sophisticate is a feminist because she is equal to a man in her capacity to love and her right to be loved in return   In the end, a Sophisticate is a feminist because she is a girl, a woman, a lady, a female, and a human being. ;D
