A Sophisticate is a Witch

"Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?" Glinda from the movie "The Wizard of Oz" (1939)

Everyone who is familiar with "The Wizard of Oz" knows when Dorothy arrives in Oz, Glinda the good witch asks her "Are you a good witch, or a bad witch"? Watching for the second time, we all laugh when Dorothy describes how "witches are old and ugly" because know that Glinda is a witch and doesn't fit that description at all.

The question that brings to mind is why do the Munchkins think Dorothy was a witch? Because she had the power to kill the evil Wicked Witch of the East? Are all those with power, witches? In the 21st Century, the answer to that question is "yes".

How does a Sophisticate get that power? And is there a difference between a bad, good, or even a wicked witch? In the musical based off of the book 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire, he changes the perspective of the audience. The audience that once feared (the feature of many nightmares and sleepless nights of children as well as adults) the Wicked Witch of the West as portrayed so well by Margaret Hamilton.

"So if you care to find me/ Look to the Western sky! / As someone told me lately/   Everyone deserves the chance/ to fly/ And if I'm flying solo/ At least I'm flying free/ To those who ground me/ Take a message back from me! "Defying Gravity" from the musical "Wicked"

In the 21st Century, a Sophisticate is given the opportunities of men. With equality and equal treatment comes good treatment as well as bad. The test for a Sophisticate is how well she deals with and handles that treatment. Will she cry? Will she get mad? or stay strong and poised?

Sophistication in the 21st Century is the awareness of knowing the "how" and "when" of getting angry.

Anger is a normal human emotion. Everyone who is alive gets angry. Whether the anger is on the inside or on the outside, it exists. Anger exists to provide a human being with imperfections. Without imperfection we are not real or even alive.

A Sophisticate becomes a "bad" witch when there her intentions are to cause harm. She becomes evil or ruthless when she is unable to control her anger in response to other negative emotions like stress, anxiety, tiredness or frustration.

"The truth will set you free but first it will piss you off" Gloria Steinem

A Sophisticate knows anger is constructive
When she is stands up for herself
When she is being mistreated or being abused
When she is standing up and beside those who she loves
When she is defending those whom she loves
When she is defending those unable to defend themselves
When she brings attention to an injustice in a situation

When a Sophisticate utilizes anger constructively, she becomes wicked.

A Sophisticate has to get mad to reinforce that she isn't a doormat. The difference between a Sophisticate and someone who isn't is when anger is utilized.  Can a Sophisticate remain precious? That is the test of true sophistication in the 21st  Century. The term "wicked" on urbandictionary .com defines it as "slang that adds emphasis". In the daily life of a Sophisticate that emphasis can be used for good or bad. A Sophisticate is wicked because she adds emphasis in a positive way.

When a Sophisticate is poised and strong, she is a good witch powerful and strong. If a rough world, she has to defend and fight for herself, it's knowing how and when that determines her level of her sophistication in the 21st Century.   There is no difference between better or best, good or wickedly great. In the end, a Sophisticate is a witch because she is powerful. ;D
