A Sophisticated Gentleman

“A true gentleman is one that apologizes anyways, even though he has not offended a lady intentionally. He is in a class all of his own because he knows the value of a woman's heart.” Shannon Adler

The difference between a Sophisticated Man  and a gentleman is a man treats a woman like his equal. A gentleman treats a woman as if she is equal in his mind and superior in his heart.

“Chivalry: It's the little boy that kisses my hand, the young man who holds the door open for me, and the old man who tips his hat to me. None of it is a reflection of me, but a reflection of them." Donna Lynn Hope

To be a gentleman in the 19th Century was about being prepared.
To be a gentleman in the 20th Century was about helping.
To be a gentleman in the 21st Century is about the heart and caring.

In the 19th Century a Sophisticate didn't have the ability to gain a career or gain an education or support herself. Therefore, a gentleman  meant be prepared to support her financially. He was there to support her with a handkerchief when she cried, standing up when she stood up from her seat, and putting something on the ground so she could walk over a puddle.

In the 20th Century a Sophisticate started to gain the opportunity to make decisions and create her own future. A gentleman meant helping not supporting her.   He went out of his way to do the little things that made her life a little easier. A gentleman opened the door, pulled out her seat so she could sit down  comfortably at restaurant, and helping her with housework.

In the 19th and 20th Century being a gentleman was about chivalry.
In the 21st Century being a gentleman is about charm and the desire to care.

Although opening the door and other polite actions are still appreciated by a Sophisticate. In the 21st Century a Sophisticate can take care of her own needs. She can support her needs financially and emotionally  (A Sophisticate is 'Miss Independent'). She can  help herself at work and take care of the home. Therefore, what it means to be a gentleman is that he is there for her whether she succeeds or fails. Whether it be in a crowd or they are alone, a gentleman makes a Sophisticate feel like the most important person in the room even  when it is just the two of them.

“A gentleman is simply a patient wolf.” Lana Turner

The difference between a Sophisticated man versus a Sophisticated gentleman is that a man treats a Sophisticate like his intellectual equal. A Sophisticated gentleman, treats a Sophisticate like his emotional superior. A gentleman is not perfect. He has the same imperfections and desires as every man. The difference is that a gentleman is patient with himself. A Sophisticate can buy herself jewelry, flowers, and chocolates, a gentleman tries to make amends by showing her respect when he makes a mistake.

In the 21st Century when a Sophisticate fails, is disappointed, needs strength or feels her power draining he is there for her. In the 21st Century, a gentleman is her port in the emotional storm of life.

A Sophisticate knows a gentleman when she trusts him to see her in the worst possible light or situation without fear of judgement or being abandoned.

When a Sophisticate can't show the rest of the world how broken she feels or is a gentleman is there to be there for her. He protects her emotionally. He is a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen when she is feeling sad, confused, scared, and insecure.

A 21st Century gentleman cares more protecting the heart of the Sophisticate rather then her physical well being. A Sophisticated gentleman cares more about opening his ears and heart instead of the door for a Sophisticate.  In the end, a Sophisticated Gentleman cares more about taking care of the emotional instead of the financial well being of a Sophisticate ;D
