A Sophisticate is a Mockingjay

"The space between when a Sophisticate fails and rises again is the time it takes her to be unafraid to defy convention." Sophisticate in the Suburbs

In 'The Hunger Games', the symbol that is carried throughout the story is the symbol of a Mockingjay. When I first saw heard of the Mockingjay, that was on a gold pin that was given to the character Katniss Everdeen, I wondered how this fictional bird different from a Phoenix. Why didn't Suzanne Collins use a Phoenix to represent Katniss Everdeen and her journey?

As I watched the story unfold I came to understand. According to the author, a mockingly was a not-so-happy accident or animal that was indirectly created by the Capitol. In essence this particular animal is a defiance to what they hoped to create or exist in their world. Katniss Everdeen from the beginning to the end was different from everyone in District 12 and eventually it was seen that she was different from everyone in Panem. The character of Katniss Everdeen, her personality and her actions was herself from the beginning to the end was the living embodiment of what Suzanne Collins called a Mockingjay.

A Sophisticate in the 21st Century is unique because she is unafraid and unapologetic to be herself or be different then what is "popular".  She is an accident. No one expected someone like her to be created or exist. Over centuries she evolved into the best of what it means to be female and male. She is someone that everyone is afraid of because of her confidence, strength, beauty, determination, ambition, and her willingness to be defiant or different in the face of injustice or inequality. She wants to be loved and treated with kindness and respect. She is willing to fight for the love from others that she has for herself in the face of being unpopular.

Mockingjays are really tough birds that can live in just about any environment.

Like a Mockingjay, a Sophisticate is tough and can live in any environment because she has to for survival. In the 21st Century, with equal opportunities and an uncertain economy a Sophisticate has to be flexible and improvise (A Sophisticate is Jazz). With life and all of it's uncertainties, twists and turns, and changes she must learn how to survive on her own.

"What is the difference between a Phoenix and a Mockingjay? Defiance" Sophisticate in the Suburbs

What is the difference between a Sophisticate who is a Phoenix and a one who is a Mockingjay? There is no difference and she is both. When a Sophisticate fails, she burns. How does she rise again? She defies whatever is keeping from loving or succeeding again.

"Leadership is defined by and as defiance." Sophisticate in the Suburbs

What inspires defiance? Love. When something dies that a Sophisticate loves, she feels there is nothing left for her to lose. She wants to care and can't. That inability to care, protect, and love results in anger. She defies  convention to fight for the loss of what she loves in order that she or others might have it back again.

"I shall allow no man belittle my soul by making me hate him" Booker T. Washington

The difference between a Sophisticate and everyone else is the fact that she is defiant in the name of standing up for something positive like love instead of the reaction to something negative like hate or anger. By standing up for what is positive and what she considers fair she becomes a leader.

"Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome" Booker T. Washington

A Sophisticate  may not have a bow and arrow like Katniss Everdeen. She does have something inside of her that allows her to be a Mockingjay. A Sophisticate doesn't hate and is not angry. She defies convention when she loses everything or fails because she loves with all of her heart. In the end, a Sophisticate is a Mockingjay because she fights for who and what she loves the most in the face of challenges and injustice. ;D
